1. Introduction to this edition of the MISRA newsletter
-------------------------------------------------------

Welcome to the eighth edition of the MISRA newsletter!

The MISRA newsletter exists to provide news and information relating to MISRA (The Motor Industry Software Reliability Association), its documents and activities. This issue is being sent to those who have registered to receive our email updates.

If you do not wish to receive future issues of this newsletter, please follow the instructions at the start of this message to unsubscribe.

Please note that the mailing list used to distribute this newsletter is not a discussion list. If you try to post to it, your post will be rejected automatically. If you have a point for discussion or a question, please use our web forum (see item 5).

2. MISRA UML
------------

There is considerable interest and growth in the use of visual modelling languages for software development and in automatic generation of production code from the models. UML has become the de facto standard in many areas of software development. The moves towards model-driven architectures require the use of the correct techniques to support software development. Within the automotive industry, MISRA started an activity in 2005 to address the use of visual modelling languages and automated code generation in automotive systems. The initial focus of the MISRA activity has been the Simulink and Stateflow languages, but it was always the intention to widen the scope and include UML.

MISRA is therefore pleased to announce the start of the new MISRA UML activity. The scope is the use of UML for the analysis and design of all vehicle-based embedded systems including control systems and "infotainment" systems. The MISRA UML work will also be applicable in non-automotive embedded systems; however, desktop applications and IT systems are specifically excluded from the scope of this work. It is recognized that this may be seen as a restriction but it is necessary to focus the work given the wide-ranging scope of UML.

Taking UML 2.0 as a starting point, the MISRA activity will identify suitable subset(s) for use in the areas outlined above. A subset is needed in order to define precisely the semantics needed for automated code generation. The work will also investigate suitable software development process guidelines where the modelling technique is based on this subset of UML. The aim of the work is to produce descriptive (i.e. goal-based) guidelines rather than prescriptive requirements.

The first meeting of the working group will be held on 15 June 2006 at a venue to be defined in the UK Midlands. If you are interested to participate, please send a short email to misra@mira.co.uk with "MISRA UML" as the subject. Please indicate what your areas of expertise are, what you would be able to contribute to the work and your preferences for meeting location, duration and frequency. Further details of the meeting will be sent towards the end of May 2006. Please note that in common with all MISRA activities participation is on a voluntary basis. Members of the MISRA UML working group will be required to sign a short agreement to confirm their acceptance of the terms of participation in the group.

3. Software readiness for production
------------------------------------

MISRA is pleased to announce that "Software Readiness for Production" has been published. This document describes metrics that may be used for tracking the progress of software projects towards the goal of production readiness - how "complete" a software project is against expected targets.

The metrics are derived from the Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP) and Production Part Approval Process (PPAP) used within the automotive industry. APQP identifies both the key activities that are critical to the quality of the product, and their timing in the vehicle development lifecycle. PPAP identifies the documents that define the production acceptance criteria, which demonstrate that the required quality has been achieved.

However, these procedures are not designed to accommodate the development process for software, because much of their emphasis is placed on the measurement of physical attributes. The MISRA "Software Readiness for Production" metrics implement the concepts of APQP and PPAP in a software context, to maintain compliance of software development with the principles of QS9000 together with equivalent procedures in ISO/TS 16949.

MISRA SRfP is only available initially as a PDF and may be purchased from the MISRA Web Store. To find out more about the document, you can download a free preview from the MISRA website that contains the table of contents and selected pages from the document. You can also download a spreadsheet that corresponds to the MISRA SRfP example in Figure 9 of the document.

4. MISRA Safety Analysis Guidelines
-----------------------------------

The final version of this document is under preparation and we intend to publish it around the middle of the year. Please watch the MISRA web site and the next edition of this newsletter for further information.

5. MISRA web forum
------------------

A reminder of the MISRA web forum which can be used to discuss and ask questions about MISRA publications. The forum now has a new section for the recently-published Software Readiness for Production document. Visit the forum at http://www.misra-c.com/forum/
